We work with care and respect for precious materials regenerated leather and discover together the merits and opportunities of both.
In this interview with Claudio Zamai, director of Limac Design, we discover the merits and opportunities of leather, known and loved by antiquity and regenerated leather, innovative and precious highly sustainable material. Let’s discover how they are used in Limac Design adapted to careful craftsmanship to become refined furnishing accessories of interior design.
Regenerated leather, how did you discover this material?
Claudio:
This material never ceases to amaze me, I’ve been working on it for more than 14 years now, it immediately fascinated me because it allows you to make a wide choice of products combining quality and attention to the environment that are among my most cherished values.
What are the advantages of regenerated leather?
Claudio:
First of all Regenerated leather is a 100% ecological and eco-sustainable material.
The regenerated leather comes from the recycling of the residues of leather and fiber of bovine leather of previous processing, is therefore among the eco-sustainable products, minimizing waste and environmental impact.
Indeed, the production of regenerated leather has a much lower environmental impact than the production of traditional leather, which often involves the use of harmful chemicals and the destruction of wooded areas to make room for livestock farms, which then require large quantities of water.
This innovative, sustainable and recycled material is proposed, in some situations, as an excellent substitute for the skin, first of all for some of its immediately visible qualities, in fact it is pleasant to the touch, soft and elastic, smooth and smells like skin.
The quality of the raw material has reached levels absolutely unthinkable some time ago, now it becomes difficult sometimes even for the most attentive consumer to distinguish immediately between leather or regenerated leather.
How can it be used in the artisans’ handwork, compared to leather is the same thing?
Claudio:
There are also other qualities that concern its texture and structure that allows us to overcome the limits that we find with the use of the skin.
Leather that has a wonderful softness that becomes a limit when it is used to make products of a certain complexity or height because it requires the use of a rigid structure (cardboard or wood) that will then be coated, regenerated leather, on the other hand, has by nature a texture and structure that makes it perfectly suitable for the production of complex articles that also have a vertical development or that are intended to contain weights, without additional materials inside, This is how in Limac we designed and built, for example, the regenerated leather and laundry holders.Â
It looks like a material that gives a lot of versatility of use, how did you exploit it?
Claudio:
Thanks to its versatility the opportunities of use are endless and for this we love to expand the offer with furnishing accessories for the home, the living room, the hotel, the office, the yacht and the private planes, providing the right balance between refinement of modern design, elegance and quality without losing sight of substantial economic savings.
I like to innovate and from collaborations with architects and interior designers come excellent solutions that can offer customized and customized products to add a touch of style and refinement to any environment. I am always open to the possibility of new collaborations to put at service my experience and the plus given by the manual craftsmanship of craftsmanship on projects aimed at the creation of custom furniture that satisfies 100% the customer looking for a one-piece.
In detail, do your craftsmen use different methods of processing between leather and regenerated leather? Are they really handmade?
Our Italian artisans, handmade for Limac both articles in leather and regenerated leather and the care that is reserved for products in leather or regenerated leather are the same.
The handcrafted seams give that touch of originality in matching or contrasting to taste.
You can see some stages of processing in this short video that you find in our channel you tube, in this case the craftsman is making a leather pocket emptier but the processing of regenerated leather is identical, these are the steps and the processing and finishing of the accessory is treated in detail.
Its soft texture and its smooth and uniform appearance, allows us to create a wide range of luxury products, such as desk sets, desk pads, tool holders, magazine racks, umbrella stands and laundry racks; objects that can withstand wear and tear and daily abuse without losing beauty and their functionality.
How do you care for regenerated leather? Does it need special maintenance?
Claudio:
Regenerated leather is also very easy to care for and maintain. Thanks to its durable structure and its soft texture, it is easy to clean and maintain in good condition. To maintain the beauty and durability of your regenerated leather furniture, simply clean it with a damp cloth and apply a skin cream regularly. Remember that it comes from the skin and loves the same treatments.
In conclusion, in my opinion regenerated leather is an excellent choice for creating elegant furnishing accessories, refined and high quality and I believe that it will gain more and more visibility in a future where we will all be more and more attentive to the environment and sustainability.
